Literature Text

"Come on, ____! Can't you keep up?" the voice was annoyingly taunting, and you felt your cheeks start the all too familiar burning once again.

You wanted to yell 'Shut up!' or cuss them out, but instead your heart dropped, knowing you would never have the courage too. The feeling in your chest was sickening, one of complete despair.

You tried to force your legs forward faster, but the energy seemed to have been drained from your body. You watched the bodies far in front of you bounce with every quick step they took. That's all you could do, after all. You couldn't shout back at them, you weren't entitled too. Because... you were different.

You weren't like them. Their perfect pale, tan, or dark skin, and their rich colorful eyes. Their smooth hair.

You're (skin color) skin wasn't the nice shades of theirs, it was like clay. It was pasty, and often oily. Your eyes were a dull shade of (e/c), the light hidden. Your (h/l) (h/c) hair was always hidden by a hat. It was times like these, which were often, that you regretted ever moving from (home town).

    To England.

It really was a beautiful country, though. London, Stonehenge, Windsor Castle, and so many more beautiful places scattered themselves across the country. It's just to bad you lived near none of them.

You just happened to wind up in the middle of the Kingdom of Idiots, and the Royal Council declared you an Outcast. Well, the Kingdom of Idiots was actually called Smithers High School. Oh look, the school was named after the city, how creative. The thing about this, though, was that it was entirely foreign exchange students, except you and another student. You had just happened to move here, not for school, but for family reasons.

But getting back on topic, you hated the Council's guts. Who were the Council? Some of the most popular kids. They had their own meetings and club. It was some weird Illuminati stuff. They decided in their "meetings" important things such as the hierarchy of the school. They ran the school, because the staff were hopeless.

The hierarchy was very exclusive, and very strict.

If you didn't comply with the rules? Well, you had learned that the hard way. That's how you became an "Outcast". There were the King and Queen, the Princes and Princesses, the Dukes and Duchesses, Marquesses and Marchioness, Counts and Countesses, Viscounts and Viscountesses, Barons and Baronesses, then Merchants, and finally Peasants. You weren't even a peasant, which is what everyone is as a First year.

You were an Outcast. Lower than a peasant. Why? It will be explained soon enough.

Also, usually, only the Third and Fourth years were Kings and Queens. Except-

"Hey, git! You get back here!" your attention was caught to the familiar voice.

Oh look, there he is. The King, Arthur Kirkland. It was amazing too, how he was a Second year, and King. It was almost unheard of. Of course, a now Third year French guy had almost become King last year. He eventually became a Prince. Though, if Arthur had had it his way, Francis would've been a peasant.

It was rumored that he had bribed his way to Prince by "persuading" the female Council members.

    Yeah.

You watched as the King chased after the Prince Alfred, who had apparently stolen his hat right off the King's head. Grabbing Alfred's hoodie, the King swung him around, wrestling his hat from the American's grip.

Right now was P.E. and you were all running the school's track. This kind of screwing around often happened during classes, especially P.E. Usually a Prince wouldn't be allowed to do the things Alfred does, but he's a special guy to Arthur. They were like brothers, and it was kinda funny to watch them fight.

Regardless, all of the nobles were total butts, even the King. People said he was a "gentleman", but not to Peasants or Outcasts. He wouldn't even look at you, or acknowledge your presence.

Silently, though, you thought he would be a nice guy if it wasn't for all of the peer pressure. You lived practically next door to him, and he seemed pretty cool when he wasn't at school. Plus he wasn't too-

Your thoughts returned to P.E. as someone roughly shoved you aside, almost causing you to fall. You stopped for a second before feeling a wash of frustration wash over you as you realized that it was your fault. You were supposed to move out of the way for a higher rank. If not, you were pushed aside without a second glance. You weren't supposed to make eye contact either, or talk to higher ranks unless spoken too, etc. You get the picture.

You continued your jogging again, random thoughts crossing your mind. In fact, you almost put yourself into a trance, just jogging steadily and thinking. It wasn't until you almost bumped into the Merchant Antonio that you snapped back to reality yet again.

You caught yourself, quickly glancing around to make sure no one had seen how close you came to touching him. You took a few steps back, hoping not to grab his attention. Even if he was a nice guy, he was still higher than you.

He was a Merchant, being flung down from Marquess last year by Arthur. He was a second year too, and was getting pretty high up in ranks in the second part of the year, but Alfred has some issues with the Spaniard.

This year, he had been a peasant, and you two had been friends for a while. He was really cool, and he didn't really mind the hierarchy. In fact, he didn't really like it or dislike it. then he became a Merchant. He wasn't power hungry, he just decided to become a Merchant by selling his tomatoes and random toys or items he made. Around the same time, you had become an Outcast, so you stopped talking.

He didn't turn around, and you barely got a glance or two from other lower classers. The teacher had started to talk, so no one spoke. He said something about football (soccer for those Americans), and a few cheers went up.

That's when you tuned out the world, yet again. You escaped into your thoughts, vaguely paying attention. If not noticed by now, you zoned out often. It was nice to escape into books that you had read, all apart of your own world. Your thoughts wandered again to the higher ranks. What were they like before this? Before... the Council, and the Kings and Queens and Princes and Princesses and everything that came with high school here.

As if on cue, you caught a gaze that pulled you out of your thoughts permanently for the day. His gaze. King Arthur. Except, you caught him looking at you.

    No.

Almost forgetting the rules, you quickly averted your own (e/c) eyes. His eyes were just wandering. Yes, surely that was it. You glanced behind you nervously.

    No one...

Looking back, you saw him pull his eyes away from you just as you were about to meet his emerald gaze yet again.

Quick, flashing questions ran through your head, all circulating one central message. What just happened?
